Two days after reconnaissance flights, the attack began. The typical missile barrage falls on us in preparation for the advance. The first shots of the "Stalin organs" were enough for the Zairians to desert in minutes, fleeing through the bush. We were alone again, six commandos and the APC driver. Three got into the armor and didn't even want to look through the hatches. My two companions and I, with binoculars, saw the arrival of two infantry trucks, one equipped with "Stalin organs".
They get out quietly at the foot of the hill and started to advance on us. They had also infiltrated several companies behind our position during the night, but we didnât know that we were almost surrounded. We reported the attack on the radio and tried to get out of there. Before that, however, Farinha, Morteirete and I had to carry the mortar and grenades into the APC, because the three commandos who were in there were afraid to come out and help us; they just pleaded for us to leave quickly.
Since the missile barrage was well concentrated around us and the enemy was approaching, the driver, who was extremely nervous, could not get the armored transport to move: the APC would jump but not keep moving; once again I hung outside and told the frightened driver through the hatch what to do, under the rain of shrapnel. He had simply forgotten to press the "ball" on the shift lever, which in the Panhards acts as an electrically operated clutch ...
We managed to start and asked him to stop when the odometer showed a distance equal to the maximum range of the mortar. As soon as he stopped the vehicle, we got out and placed the mortar, targeting our old positions in quick succession. Another plane found us and, with the MAG machine gun mounted on top of the APC, I fired at the aircraft, which moved away.
The three rats were still trapped as Farinha fed and Morteirete fired the "81". But we were unaware of the fact that we had stopped just a few hundred meters from the enemy that had infiltrated during the night!
We picked up the weapon and move on. On the paved road, dozens of soldiers were stopped; I confused them with Zairians. They jump into the bush when they see us and I order the driver to close the hatch and accelerate; I lean out wielding the MAG, protected by the small armored shield.
I do not open fire, because I have no visible identification and I also believe that I confused them, perhaps because they did not know that we had the armored transport. We ended up passing through the large group without firing a single shot and, accelerating, we headed for Sassalemba. The enemy had infiltrated the night before! The three "girls" inside the armored car were about to pass out from terror, provoking Farinha's high-pitched laughter. The APC moves in zigzags and I order the driver to open the hatch or he will throw us into the ravine.
